Starting what would become a historic partnership, Mayor of Belo Horizonte (and future Brazilian president) Juscelino Kubitschek commissioned 33-year-old Oscar Niemeyer to design a series of buildings in a subdivision near the city. Included in the project was the church of St. Francis of Assisi, considered an important example of Niemeyer's early formal experiments.
