Political Checklist: State of the Union Preview

By: News Desk

In this week's Political Checklist, NewsHour Political Editor David Chalian and Senior Correspondent Judy Woodruff preview President Obama's State of the Union address, which is expected to include mention of job creation and how to handle the federal deficit, among other topics.

President Obama will be addressing the new GOP-controlled House of Representatives. House Speaker John Boehner will sit behind the president during the speech, a sign of the GOP victories in midterm elections that swept Republicans to new positions of power.

Many political watchers also see the speech as an informal kickoff to his re-election campaign ahead of the 2012 election cycle.
