Actress Ruby Dee dies at 91

Civil rights activist and actress Ruby Dee has died at age 91, Dee’s daughter Nora Davis Day confirmed Thursday. Day said her mother passed away Wednesday night at home in New Rochelle, New York.

Dee acted on the Broadway stage and the silver screen. In 1961, she starred alongside Sidney Poitier in “A Raisin in the Sun.”

An Emmy, Grammy and Screen Actors Guild award-winner, in 2007, Dee was nominated for a Golden Globe for her role in “American Gangster.”

According to New York Daily News, her final film — a crime-drama, “King Dog,” opposite Ice-T — is still in production.
