Hurricane Isabel Speeds Toward the East Coast

October 1, 2003
Scientists Sharpen Tools for Tracking Hurricanes
For years, scientists have worked to develop powerful new tools to predict the paths of hurricanes and monitor their likely impact. Betty Ann Bowser reports on the latest technologies meteorologists are using to keep tabs on these devastating storms and what new tools are being developed.

Isabel's Track and Impact:

Almost two weeks after Hurricane Isabel's powerful winds and storms, thousands of East Coast residents continue to assess the full impact of the storm, which raced across the mid-Atlantic and up the Eastern seaboard in late September.

Hurricane Basics:

One of nature's most powerful known forces, hurricanes can pack winds of more than 150 miles per hour and have been feared for centuries.

Facts, Figures and Trivia:

Which hurricanes caused the most damage? The greatest number of deaths? What states are hurricanes most likely to hit? Here are the answers to these and more questions.

Major Atlantic Storms Since 1995:

Since 1995, 10 hurricanes have caused such severe damage that the affected countries asked the World Meteorological Association to retire the storm's name.

Dr. Naomi Surgi of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration and Dr. William Gray of Colorado State's Tropical Meteorology Project answer your questions about the science of tracking hurricanes.

The Hurricane of '38
With none of the technology now commonly used to track hurricanes, the people of New England had no way to know of one giant storm's approach. American Experience reports on The Hurricane of 1938.
