Regina Peruggi, President
Native New Yorker Regina Peruggi is a fund raising professional
in charge of one of the toughest jobs in the city. She runs Central
Park. Stretching over more than 800 acres, the park features ponds,
fields, playgrounds, and more than 26,000 trees. Peruggi, the ex-wife
of former mayor Rudolph Giuliani, is responsible for every penny
of the $20 million it takes to operate this urban oasis. Only $3
million comes from city funding; Peruggi must raise the rest of
her budget through donations from the public.
After serving as president of Marymount Manhattan College for more
than ten years, the Peruggi has only been with Central Park Conservancy
a few months before she's sent to perform one of the lowliest jobs
in the system: Peruggi puts on a gardener's uniform and spends a
week doing manual labor. The glamorous late-night fund raising galas
will temporarily stop for this gal, who'll have to report to work
at 6:45 a.m.
