Close Aztec Diet Aztec Diet
The Aztecs lived very simple lives. Their diet was mostly maize or corn flour made into porridge or baked into tortillas. They also ate beans, sweet potatoes, avocados, chili peppers, onions, and tomatoes. Meat, especially turkey and dog, was a treat. Floating algae from the lake was made into a kind of cheesecake and they especially enjoyed eating the eggs of water insects. Sometimes poor people had to eat slugs, flies, worms and tadpoles to increase their diet. The favorite drink of the nobility was chocolatl, made from the seeds of the cacao tree. The cacao seeds were ground and mixed with vanilla and spices into a frothy drink. Nobles also smoked tobacco, by pinching together their nostrils as they sucked in the smoke.
