The Promise of the New World
The Conquistadors' mission was to find gold, convert new souls to Christianity, and claim new territories for the King and the glory of their country. As they explored the new lands, they gained personal fame and wealth by taking a share of the riches they could plunder from the local tribespeople. Rather than settle, their desire was to make a quick fortune, and they often stopped at nothing to accomplish this.

How Did They Get There?

For the conquistadors, life and death often depended on having the latest technology of the time for navigation. To us, their "advanced technology" seems very simple, but it allowed them to accomplish a great deal and satisfied their needs of survival. For example, the conquistadors needed to be able to steer their ships and find their way with very unreliable maps. They also needed to be able to measure the distance traveled in order to follow their course and get back home again.
