There are a very large number of organizations dedicated to helping people with substance abuse and addiction problems and their families and friends. This is only a partial list.

National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA)

This is one of the National Institutes of Health and a very important source of detailed, trustworthy information. Its mission is to bring the power of science to bear on drug abuse and addiction and it supports most of the world's research on these areas.

National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA)

This is also one of the National Institutes of Health and it concentrates on the effort to reduce alcohol-related problems. Its website has extensive information about a wide range of alcohol-related topics.

Alcoholics Anonymous

Alcoholics Anonymous is probably the world's most famous mutual support and assistance organization, offering the world's best-known 12-Step Program. The organization is dedicated to helping people of any age who want to end their addiction to alcohol.

Narcotics Anonymous

Similar to Alcoholics Anonymous, this is an international, community-based association of recovering drug addicts dedicated to mutual support and assistance.

Al-Anon/Alateen

Al-Anon and Alateen Family Groups are mutual support and assistance groups for the family and friends of people with alcohol problems.

Guide to Mutual Support Resources

This is a comprehensive guide to mutual support and 12-Step Programs for people in or seeking recovery from addiction and their family and friends. It includes background information about the role of mutual support in recovery.

National Clearinghouse for Alcohol and Drug Information

This federal agency provides extensive information about addiction prevention, treatment, and recovery and has a staff available at all times to suggest ways of getting help.

Johnson Institute

The Johnson Institute is dedicated to expanding the public's understanding of addiction as a treatable illness, and to promoting recovery through early intervention, appropriate care, family involvement, and community support.

National Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence

This organization, which promotes addiction prevention, intervention, and treatment, has a toll-free Hope Line (800-NCA-CALL) offering information and referral, as well as a National Intervention Network (800-654-HOPE) to educate and assist families and friends of people with addiction.

SMART Recovery

SMART Recovery® offers free face-to-face and online mutual help groups. SMART Recovery® (Self-Management And Recovery Training) helps people recover from all types of addictive behaviors, including: alcoholism, drug abuse, substance abuse, drug addiction, alcohol abuse, gambling addiction, cocaine addiction, and addiction to other substances and activities.
