Grief and Loss

Many life changes involve loss, and we grieve the endings in our lives.

Some of the most painful losses we experience are the deaths of loved ones. Grief is a natural, active process during which we experience intense feelings, revisit memories, and adjust to life without the loved one. There is no one “right” way to grieve, no timetable; and the ups and downs during grieving can be unpredictable. The support of family and friends is more important than ever during times of grief and loss.

Five things you should know about Grief and Loss

  1. There is no predictable timetable or set of steps for the grief process

  2. People who are grieving often experience physical symptoms; it is important to see a healthcare provider to determine whether the physical symptoms need treatment

  3. Anticipatory grief comes when a loved one is facing the end of life but the death has not yet occurred

  4. Traumatic grief can occur after losses due to homicide, war, car crashes, suicide, and other sudden and violent deaths

  5. If months go by and extreme emotions prevent a person from moving on with life, he may be experiencing complicated grief
