Stephen Clarke started his career at Christie's South Kensington in 1978. He became head of the Silver department at Christie's King Street in 1990 and a director in 1992. He is now an independent fine-art valuer and advisor. He is also a consultant to Clarke Gammon Auctioneers in Guildford, a family firm.
