Chapter 1: Latin Music & "Mainstream" Pop

February 24th 1999. The 41st Grammy Awards. A young Puerto Rican pop star was scheduled to perform his latest hit.

[FOOTAGE: RICKY MARTIN PERFORMING "THE CUP OF LIFE" AT THE GRAMMYS]

LEILA COBO, (VO) This was a big deal, because to this day, they (OC) hate to have Latin acts perform in Spanish at their Grammys. (VO) They think that ratings drop the minute you put another language in.

Ricky Martin sang the opening lines in English.

DESMOND CHILD (VO) I just had a (OC) feeling all over. It was goosebumps (VO) that something special was happening.

LEILA COBO (VO) That was such a kick-ass song. I mean, what other song sounded (OC) like that then? Nothing sounded like that.

JOSE BEHAR I was there that night. The place went insane. [FOOTAGE: RICKY MARTIN PERFORMING "THE CUP OF LIFE" AT THE GRAMMYS]

TOMMY MOTTOLA (VO) Every star (OC) in those first five or ten rows, I mean they were fixated (VO) on him. It was just fascinating.

Over the coming years, a handful of artists and producers would take Latin Music into the heart of American culture.

But even as the Latin wave took hold, a new fusion of rhythms-gritty, provocative, defiant — began to emerge in cities across America.
