FORTY DAYS AGO WE DIED

By Setareh Sabety

Forty days ago we died

Along with that mother

Whose scream I still hear

Not only in my ear

But deeper

In the bloody cracks

Of my broken heart.

Forty days ago

We saw life

Chased out of

The young eyes

Of someone else's daughter

Forty days ago

We all died

Bearing witness

To the naked cruelty

Equally random and arrogant

Of those we refuse to call

Men

Songs of heroism anger me,

Drown in the wail

Of mourning mothers

Churning in my stomach

Martyrs we do not need

We are dead already

We died forty days ago

Bearing witness

To the uncensored

'Graphic content'

Of human cruelty!

What we need

Is a miracle:

A mother

Whose newborn's

First cry

Rips through

The clean crisp

Air of freedom

Finally found.

Let us hope for a "rebirth".

Neda Soltan RIP - Never to be forgotten :-(

The people of conscience in the free world support your quest for freedom and justice. Stay strong and focused. The world must keep the lights trained upon your present leaders so that they understand that there is a price to pay for being evil and part of that price is pressure from the free world to relent and bring freedom and justice to your people. Nothing less is acceptable.

That is powerful, that poem. I will pray for the day in Iran, when that newborn's cry

does rise in freedom.

Bless you all, Peg

Thank you, again, Setareh Sabety for another powerful, heart-wrenching poem to memorialize Neda and keep her memory alive.

It is so very encouraging to learn of the persistent protests over Mahmoud "Landslide" Ahmadinejad' rigged re-election.

The people of Iran are strong, clearly, and those of us who watch and pray for justice and freedom for them will never give up. It is simply a matter of time and persistence.

Fantastic! Very powerful.

i grew up in southern california in the 80's and knew many iranians from the diaspora. i have a great deal of respect for them as a people and a culture.

their struggle is not just iranian, as most people here know. it is the struggle for for fair and representative government that we all are part of, even in this country. (highlighted by the excesses of the bush administration)

i wish them the best on this day of mourning.

because of our interventionist history in iran, we need to be careful to not cross any lines in this conflict. and, luckily, in this situation, mere human reflection of the unconscionable actions of the regime suffices.

stay strong, do not forget.

God will hear the cries of innocent blood in the grave, un needed martrys is life accounted for. The prayers in your heart for theese people are multiplied in gods heart.

- there will come a day when a generation arises whose cries scream truth justice and freedom. I pray mercy for the sins of my country and myyself.

- i will pray for your mourning heart and the mourning heart of your and her loved ones.
