  hen people said they were "going to the bathroom" in 1900, chances are that they actually intended to take a bath, as the toilet was not a standard household appliance until years later. And they probably lived in a luxuriously appointed home, since only the wealthy could afford to install a bathtub. As improbable as it may seem, the bathroom was once a major indicator of social status.
