 1908 study found that cleaning an eight-room house required as many as 27 hours per week of labor -- not including laundry. The focus of much of this work was the scullery, a room adjoining the kitchen that held the housecleaning equipment as well as the "copper" for boiling clothes. Many homemakers hired servants in order to spend as little time as possible in the scullery.
