My hero is Atticus Finch
I first read To Kill a Mockingbird as an adult, which is surprising since I have always been a voracious reader. It had just never crossed my path until about 10 years ago. Now I am an English teacher, and there is no other book I love to explore with students. Additionally, it is such a pleasure for me to read on a personal level. TKAM may not be a perfect novel, but, to me, there is no better embodiment of the human capacity for goodness than Atticus. Sure, he is idealized and perhaps unrealistic. However, Harper Lee captures the American persona, what it aspires to be and what it sometimes sinks to, within TKAM. And, Atticus represents the potential best there is in everyone.
