1961 British director Peter Hall transforms the Shakespeare Memorial Theatre into the Royal Shakespeare Company.

1962 Ellen Stewart founds Cafe La MaMa, Etc. in the East Village in New York and gives opportunities to new directors, writers and producers, marking a period of rapid and diverse growth in the American theatre. Uta Hagen performs in Edward Albee's "Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf" on Broadway.

1964 Peter Brook's "Theatre of Cruelty" season with the Royal Shakespeare Company culminates with Brook's celebrated production of Peter Weiss's "Marat/Sade."

1966 Tom Stoppard's "Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead" is performed at the Edinburgh Festival, Scotland.

1968 The Living Theatre produces "Paradise Now" in New York.
