The arts are basic to education. A school with strong arts education helps provide students with a complete academic experience, one that caters to the comprehensive nature of learning, development, and achievement. Through the arts, children build cognitive, perceptual, and analytic abilities. In the process, they also gain a heightened sensitivity, understanding, and respect for themselves and their diverse community. But how do you bring the arts into your classroom?

In this section we discuss several factors that are important for arts integration. Although teachers and the larger school community interpret and approach arts education in various ways, we provide information on some of the more integral components. We also present lesson plans in the disciplines of dance, literary arts, music, theatre, and the visual arts to help you bring the arts into your own classroom. The lesson plans are constructed using different methods, allowing you to choose the one that most interests you and best suits the needs of your students.
