"Dance is about living out loud with your body; your whole body speaks.
It is about levity." -- Edward Villella
Many consider George Balanchine (1904-1983) to be the father of
contemporary ballet. Balanchine's choreography is characterized by
athleticism and the interaction of music and movement rather than an
emphasis on costume or plot. Edward Villella, a Balanchine protégé,
spent 15 years as a principal soloist for the New York City Ballet. In
1986, Villella traded in his ballet shoes to become the director of the
Miami City Ballet.
