It may be how we survive, but eating can be brutal. In one series of Catherine Chalmers' photos, a caterpillar consumes a tomato and is then eaten by a praying mantis. A large frog then gobbles up the praying mantis, beginning an endless cycle. There is a harsh truth and whimsical beauty to these compositions that, in their close-up focus, examine the distance between nature and observing humans.
