Richard Maxwell coaches his actors, who are often amateurs, to deliver their lines in as neutral and affectless a manner as possible. The emphasis is on the text and the burden of interpretation of the language falls to the audience. This directing technique may lead you to believe that Maxwell, who writes, directs, and produces all his own plays, is essentially slacking on the job. However, behind this façade of "non-style" lies a calculated effort to free the production and, ultimately, the audience from the clichés of human emotion. EGG drops in on Maxwell as he stages "House," "Boxing Story," and his latest play, "Cavemen."
