Cindy Sherman is the protagonist of these photographs and in each she assumes a different persona. Sherman's alter-identities suggest identity is fluid, a challenge to the notion of a single, fixed self. Since "Untitled Film Stills," Sherman has continued to draw upon pop culture, history, and art history in her creation of self-portraits that seem never, really, to be about her.
