From Lake Elsinore to East L.A., auto mechanics are transforming their shops into art studios for creating a quirky kind of sculpture: Muffler Men. Made from discarded mufflers and other auto parts, these sculptures add color and whimsy to the streets, as well as distinction to store fonts.
EGG meets some of the mechanics, the modern-day Michelangelos who bring life into rusting junk, and visits an exhibition at UCLA that posits their Muffler Men as the quintessential folk art of our day.
