In 1987, toy manufacturer Fisher-Price was betting that kids would go wild over the PXL-2000 -- a new, plastic camera for kids -- and that they would become mini-Premingers, Spielbergs and Scorceses. Fisher-Price bet wrong. While kids didn't go for the camera, independent filmmakers did.

Before there were Micrecians there were amateurs. Beginning in the 1920s, amateur movie clubs were common in communities all across America. Neighbors would gather round the projector to swap their latest reels. Sid Laverents, a one-time vaudeville performer, has been an active amateur movie-maker for over half a century.
