Mary Zimmerman first caught the attention of theater audiences with her adaptation of Homer's 8th Century B.C. poem, "The Odyssey." Following stage versions of THE NOTEBOOKS OF LEONARDO DA VINCI and THE ARABIAN NIGHTS, Zimmerman was well on her way to earning a MacArthur Foundation "genius" grant. Her play "Metamorphoses" earned Zimmerman the 2002 Tony Award for Best Direction of a Play, in addition to garnering a Tony nomination for Best Scenic Design.
Zimmerman's process is unique; she casts a group of actors, begins rehearsals without a script, and then creates a play based on the personal qualities of her actors and themes of classical literature. EGG trains its cameras on Zimmerman, her work and her collaborators, and hears what she has to say about the creation of theater and the timeless power of art.
