photo Posing as a model for Ann Gale's portraits requires a lot of patience. It's not that she's difficult to work with, it's just that, as she says, "I have to have spent a lot of time around somebody before I start to see something." How much time? Gale paints in increments of three-hour sessions, twice a week, for a period of at least four months. Most of her best work, she says, occurs in the last twenty minutes of these sessions. The models begin to sit not how they want to appear in a picture, but in the way their bodies actually hold themselves up.
