Monk singing "When we do the chanting, called 'zogay,' we don't use our lips or tongues. We breathe from deep inside the throat to produce this sound," explains head monk Geshe Lobzang Chetan. In this way, the monks are able to use harmonic overtones to produce two stable notes, while creating a third, higher, pitch. This allows a single person to sing chords and a melody. For the Buddhist monks of the Drepung Gomang Monastery, who spend up to eight years developing this singing technique, chanting is a process through which one offers everything to one's Lama, or spiritual teacher. This is called the offering of the mandala.
