The Winning Essay

LUCY THE LIFEGUARD, by Joe
10 years old
California

Last month my friend Neil and I went to his grandparent's house. His grandparents weren't there so my family and dog came also. Neil got his trunks on and I got mine on. We went outside to swim. First Neil jumped than I jumped in.

After a while I got bored and went inside. Neil stayed in the pool for a couple more minutes. Those couple of minutes was the longest couple of minutes of his life!!! In those couple of minutes his life was at risk! Neil did not know it but it could have been the last time he jumped in a pool. The last time he saw the yellow rays of the sun. When he dove into that pool it could have been the last breath he would take.

Neil dove into the pool and hit his head on the bottom. "Lucy", my dog, started barking. She was going crazy out there. Our normally calm and quiet dog was going crazy. She would run to the screen then run to the pool then run to the screen again the back to the pool etc., etc., etc. I ran outside only to see Neil at the bottom of the pool. I yelled to my mom, "Mom, come quick. Neil is at the bottom of the pool and isn't getting up." My mom ran outside and dove in the pool. She brought Neil up to the top and called for my brother and sister. They gave him CPR. They got him back to breathing but he still had to go to the hospital.

An ambulance came and took him to the hospital. We went to visit him in the hospital every day.

Now I realize if it weren't for Lucy, my friend Neil would be dead right now.

Joe receives the top prizes of a $500 scholarship from Ford Division of the Ford Motor Company and a Canon Sure Shot del Sol solar-powered Camera, as well as a videotape copy of the NATURE "Extraordinary Dogs" program.
