| Luis Castro, age 16 at the start of the film, is the son of Rosa Cruz. He was raised by his mother and has almost no contact with his biological father who lives in the Bronx. He did not get along with his stepfather, Benny. Several violent incidents lead to his being thrown out of the house.

Eventually, he dropped out of high school and left his job at the Center for Family Life's After-School program. He accepts the advice of the Center's co-founder, Sister Geraldine, and eventually makes peace with his mother and stepfather. After his girlfriend Darlene becomes pregnant, they move to Cleveland, Ohio to live with Darlene's relatives. |
