WHAT'S HAPPENING IS DISCUSSION GROUPS?
A discussion group facilitator at a Metropolitan Community Church in Raleigh, North Carolina, reports that his group's greatest challenge is accommodating diverse educational backgrounds. The group finds the TALKING ABOUT GENESIS Resource Guide accessible and helpful for providing common ground. Discussions must include and stimulate members very familiar with the biblical world, such as a former priest and several Divinity students from nearby Duke University, as well as first-time Bible readers, such as one man who was previously unaware that the Bible is translated into English and that not all translations are the same. The group has evolved certain strategies for breaking down the educational heirarchy. For instance, when discussing God's promise of offspring to Abraham which took many years to fulfill, instead of asking, "Why did God take so long for Abraham?" the group asked, "What have you been waiting for God to do in your life for many years?" Answering the first question might require specialized knowledge of the text's history and literary context. But by focusing on what the text might ask of us, the group was able to create a conversation in which everyone was able to participate.
