[Not rated.] *LAW AND ORDER (April 24, 1996 episode): The trial of a woman accused of killing her child who pleads not guilty, claiming that God ordered her to sacrifice the child. [Not rated.] Cain and Abel *EAST OF EDEN (1955): Elia Kazan's film, based on John Steinbeck's retelling of the Cain and Abel story. With James Dean in his first starring role. (See fuller write-up in Guide, Chapter 3 Activities.) Noah *NOAH'S ARK (1929): A silent epic that uses the story of Noah as a simile for World War I. Several animals and bit players actually drowned during the spectacular flood sequence, so the torment shown is authentic. [Not rated.] Jacob *JACOB (1994): Made for cable drama about Jacob, Rachel, and Leah. Starring Matthew Modine. [Not rated.] Joseph *JOSEPH (1995): Made for cable drama about Joseph's hardships at the hands of his brothers and the Egyptians before rising to power as a result of his God-given powers. With Ben Kingsley as Joseph, and Martin Landau as his father, Jacob. [Not rated.] Movies Related To General Bible Stories *THE BIBLE (1966): John Huston's Cecil B. DeMille-like film about five of the first stories in the Bible. (Need to check which stories.) *THE GREEN PASTURES (1936): An adaptation of Marc Connelly's 1930 Pulitzer-winning play which attempts to retell Biblical stories in the Black English Vernacular of the 1930s. Includes the stories of Adam, Noah, and other characters in Genesis. Southern theater owners boycotted the controversial film which had an all-Black cast. [Not rated; not always available in local video stores.] CD ROMS A number of good CD-ROMs are available. On disk, you can get the Hebrew Bible (with as many as five different translations, Hebrew and English, word and topic searches, etc.), as well as the New Testament, concordances, maps, historical information, photographs, artwork, and more. Among the disks available: BibleWorks (Michael Bushell, publisher); The Complete Multimedia Bible (Compton's NewMedia; 800-284-2045); The New Family Bible (Time Warner Interactive; 800-482-3766); PC Study Bible Series (many different titles; Bible Soft); The QuickVerse Bible Reference Library (Parsons Technology Inc.; 800-223-6925); Torah Educational Software (many different titles). Other related titles include The Soncino Midrash Rabbah and The Soncino Talmud (Davka Corporation). Prices range from $25 to $300-plus. THE INTERNET AND THE WORLD WIDE WEB NEWSGROUPS Newsgroups are public message-board systems in cyberspace. There are many different kinds of newsgroups related to Genesis. For example, there are newsgroups that focus on the Bible and Bible research, including Bible Research (alt.christnet.bible), Bible Studies (christnet.bible), and Bible Study (soc.religion.christian.bible-study). There are also general religious newsgroups, such as Christian Ministers (alt.christnet), Islam (soc.religion.Islam), Judaism (soc.culture.jewish), Religion (talk.religion.misc), and Religious Thought (christnet.religion), as well as denominational newsgroups, including: Baha'i (soc.religion.bahai); Buddhism (talk.religion.buddhism); Catholicism (talk.religion.catholic); Church of Christ (alt.religion.christian.boston-church); Quakers (soc.religion.quaker); and Unitarianism (soc.religion.unitarian-univ).
