The
cult of the Fuhrer was reinforced by the many ritual
events of the Nazi state. Special stadiums were built
to house pageants, rallies, and torch-light processions.
Thousands participated in elaborately choreographed
spectacles culminating in the arrival of Hitler himself.
One 1934 Nazi Party rally in Nuremberg was meticulously
produced by filmmaker Leni Riefenstahl. She had storm
troopers and Hitler Youth march in special formations
for her cameras, and filmed the massive crowds from
the air. The opening sequences of the resulting films,
Triumph of the Will, depict Hitler, in an airplane,
descending from the skies like a god.
