At a time of civil war in El Salvador -- when 75,000 people were disappeared or killed -- four American churchwomen were abducted, raped, and murdered. News Update: On July 23, 2002, a jury in West Palm Beach, Florida found the generals liable for the torture of Dr. Juan Romagoza, Neris Gonzalez, and Carlos Mauricio. The jury awarded them $54.6 million in damages. Jorge Montes had withdrawn earlier from the case. Bill Ford and the other families lost on appeal in the churchwomen's case, and are filing a petition with the U.S. Supreme Court. The suits, Romagoza et al. v. Garcia et al. and Ford et. al. v.
