Jack Klugman: Well I think everybody can identify with it. If you got two of the neatest persons in the world, one is a little neater than the other. So, to him, that guy’s a slob. So, clean and dirty is very, very important in people’s lives. Orderly – I have a son. If he went into your house, first I have to do when I go over to my son’s, I have to take off my shoes. He’ll fix your pictures, he’ll straighten them out, he does everything. He must be in control, he’s a control freak. That’s what he is. And the other guy is sloppy. And Tony understood that. When – he never was, and I say he was neat for himself – he was trying to help you. His sounds were wonderful. He knew what comedy was. I mean he – when he, his sinuses clogged and he made that sound. And went crazy. And nobody ever made that sound the way he did. Jack Leonard, nobody ever did. So it’s – he understood comedy, and he understood it very, very well. And that’s why I think we were a big success.

It’s Jack Lemmon, not Jack Leonard!
That was really sweet, I love the Odd Couple!
A very happy birthday Mr. Klugman…and many more
Happy 87th (!!) Birthday! My husband and I were wondering how old you were in a certain episode of The Odd Couple we watched tonight. I thought 46 or 45, he thought younger, God love ‘im, and you were indeed 46. It was nice to be able to impress my husband with my honed skills at age detection. Anyway, in verifying your age then on Wikipedia, I noticed it was your birthday right now! (Well, “yesterday” to us here in Australia, of course.) I unwittingly celebrated it by teasing out the Odd Couple theme tune on my piano today. I was showing my dog who loved it. I’ve had that music crescendo-ing in my head for two weeks now. Obsessed! Here’s to your continued health. I wish you every good thing under the sun.
Much love and best wishes on your 87th. You’re awesome!
Was watching Quincy this morning. I really enjoyed it, my parents watched it in the 70s I thought it was silly being a teenager but now I knom its appeal
I don’t suspect you actually read these postings but I must say; Thank you for the many eyars of wonderful entertainment, happy birthday. God Bless. from the twilight episodes, The odd couple, broadway plays, Quincy, thanks again for all those memorable shows and characters.
Take 2 FINE actors. A supreme script. A libral director: Voila! Hit Sitcom. In my opinion, it takes your better actors to pull off genuine, witty comedy. Jack Klugman proves the piont: he had one of the greatest ranges among American actors of the 20th century. Completely believable.
Tony Randall and Jack Klugman actually did The Odd Couple better than Lemmon and Matthau. I wonder how many people truly get what an impressive (seemingly impossible) feat that is, and tribute to the greatness of the former 2. Both were so talented and understood comedy so well…REAL comedy, not the unoriginal, vulgar sewage that passes for comedy nowdays. Hats off to a great man and great actor.
PS let’s not forget the culinary contributions, and I don’t mean Randall! Who among us hasn’t cooked up their own Goop Melange at one time or another? (Randall’s other contribution was of course musical: happy….and peppy…..)
The Odd Couple is my favorite all-time TV show! I just want you to know that I remembered your birthday is the 27th, tomorrow . I wish you a very happy birthday and continued good health.
Much love and admiration.
