Having as a child experienced the worst possible encounter with this 'opportunistic stowaway,' it surprises me that more was not spoken about the effects of bites from the nest.
I lived in South Florida at the time and lay down on the front lawn of our house, the grass had a root system that allowed for the building of a large nest of these ferocious creatures. Upon the feeling of what seemed to be fire from the top of my head to the soles of my feet, I quickly ran into the shower and stood under the coldest water possible. It took approximately 1/2 hr. in the cold water before I could feel again. To this day, I cannot experience the bite of the fire ant without remembering that first encounter with them.

I would like to inform everyone of a situation that has put my wife,s health in serious jepardy from phorid fly bites. this might not be as serious a threat as the imported fire ant,but I think it needs to be considered and the public needs to be informed. We will not know just how serious the threat will be until the lab tests are retirned to our infectious disrase doctor on 10-31-08
