Legendary White Stallions
Introduction

The striking white Lipizzaner stallions of the famed Spanish Riding School in Vienna have been thrilling audiences for centuries. During the winter public performance season, the horses execute breathtaking displays of carefully choreographed and synchronized movements known as high classical dressage. The riding school’s success relies on the strong bonds the animals establish with their riders during years of training; Lipizzaner stallions go through a minimum of six years of practice and preparation before performing publicly. Legendary White Stallions explores how Lipizzaners have developed from horses bred for war in the rugged Atlas Mountains of North Africa into living works of art capturing the hearts of millions in a world-famous court of kings. “Legendary White Stallions” premiered Wednesday, May 1 at 8/7 check local listings).

As a show & pleasure rider and lover of horses, I was fortunate to see these amazing animals many years ago when I was a teenager. If you ever have the opportunity to see them, please treat yourself. You will be inspired and amazed. I’ll be watching this program!

Did anyone know that there has been also a Royal Hungarian Spanish Ridingschool in Budapest from the September 1. 1933 until October 16. 1944?

There commanders were Vitéz László Hanthy and Lt. Col. Géza von Hazslinszky. Eighteen horses of that school were destroyed by the Russian Army on the 24th of March west of the Lake Balaton. Four were put in harness to pull munitions’ wagons in the direction of Vienna
The name of Lt. Col. Géza von Hazslinszky is mentioned in the Walt Disney film: “The Miracle of the White Stallions”

  • Marj

I’m looking forward to this show. I’ve seen them live in the U.S. and have been lucky enough to own and ride four of these lovely horses

  • Sarah

I have been working with horses for years. I love to see you having programs about this awesome creature. The Lipizzaner is truly amazing.

  • LeeAnne

The Spanish Riding School has not toured the US in decades. The traveling shows that do tour here are the same breed of horses but have no connection. One is based in Florida and one in the Midwest.
This Nature show is the REAL DEAL Spanish Riding School and should not be missed!

  • Debra

LOVED the show “The Legendary White Stallions.” !!! There was no mention of George Patton and his rescue of these horses in 1945 — is this included in the DVD? The write up about the show said that this was to be covered in the show.

  • Lloyd

Today is my uncle John Huber’s birthday. He loved horses and nurtured many in his lifetime. He inspired his sons and daughter to love and ride horses. He also inspired that love in me and summer after summer I rode with my cousins in the fields and forests of a village outside of Smithfield, Virginia. Your program this evening was not only a fitting tribute to the magnificent Lipizzaner but a cherished reminder of the bond and mutual love between horse, nature and man. Thank you for airing “The Legendary White Stallions” on John Huber’s birthday.

The Spanish Riding School toured the US in 2005, and I was lucky enough to see them. It was an amazing show. They don’t come overseas often, I’m sure the logistics of flying the horses and all the travel is the main obstacle; I believe they do travel a bit in Europe but of course that’s not as far to travel.

I have also seen the touring Lippizan group from Florida, and while that was a nice show, it was not at all comparable to the “real deal” SRS. Someday I hope to go to Vienna and see them perform there.

  • Beverly Washington

I made it my priority that I would not missed this program. So well documented, I thought it was a GREAT show and will watch it again. Well Breed Horses as these, so well organize, the best program I have seen on Nature is such a long time. Again a GREAT show to watch and will watch again, it will be aired again in my area early friday morning.

  • Paige

FANTASTIC SHOW! I want to see it again. So much information. Could easily watch it again and learn things that I may have missed the first time around. I love love love horses & it is my dream to learn how to ride them. Seeing this show taught me so much. So beautiful. PBS: Can you air this show again – please?

    Hi Sharon,
There most likely will be rebroadcasts on your local public television station. You can check the schedule here.

  • Margaret

For more information on Lipizzaners in the U.S. visit the United States Lipizzan Federation website at http://www.uslipizzan.org. We are also on Facebook. It’s a great community! I am lucky to have two in my life and they are an amazing breed. Athletic, smart, long lived, willing and beautiful. We are trying to get the word out that they aren’t just for the palaces of Europe but excel at many disciplines from dressage to driving to jumping to ranch work and trail riding.

  • Judith

I’ve watched this program four times! I wish it was longer! Thank you.

  • Mallery

I had the pleasure of seeing these amazing animals at George Mason University several years ago. They take your breath away. I’ve been waiting for them to return to the area to see them again. The Lippizzaner’s are a must see.

  • Michael

Wonderful program! I was so impressed to find out that the director, writer was also the cameraman on the show. To be the cameraman and direct at the same time is extremely difficult….Amazing work by Michael Schlamberger.

I have already recommended the film to 15 people already!
I have to disagree with the comment left by “Janet” in reference to Marc McFarland about the history of the horses used in wars. As a Dressage rider for many years, it gives the origins of the movements used in today’s Dressage exhibitions. Being a film maker myself, I truly believe films should “guide” the audience and let them draw their own conclusions.
