Foxes are small-to-medium-sized mammals in the dog family (Canidae). The term “fox” is a common-name category that applies to several canid species across multiple genera; in a narrower sense, it refers to the “true foxes” in the genus Vulpes. Foxes typically resemble slender, bushy-tailed dogs, with long fur, upright pointed ears, and a narrow snout. Their long, bushy tail is often called a “brush.” Many fox species are opportunistic omnivores, commonly eating small mammals and birds, insects and other invertebrates, eggs, and plant foods such as fruit; diet varies by species, season, and local availability.
