Douglas Starr


Douglas Starr, a veteran science writer, serves as co-director of the Knight Center for Science and Medical Journalism at Boston University. His book BLOOD: AN EPIC HISTORY OF MEDICINE AND COMMERCE, a three-century history of blood's evolution into a global commodity, inspired the series. BLOOD won the 1998 LOS ANGELES TIMES Book Prize in the science and technology category, and was included on the Best Books of the Year lists of PUBLISHERS WEEKLY, BOOKLIST, and LIBRARY JOURNAL. Starr first began covering science issues as an investigative newspaper reporter, later entering the field of magazine and television writing. He has contributed to many publications and media outlets, including SMITHSONIAN, AUDUBON, TIME, SPORTS ILLUSTRATED, NATIONAL WILDLIFE, THE CHRISTIAN SCIENCE MONITOR, THE LOS ANGELES TIMES, and public television. He has lectured extensively at such places as the Royal College of Surgeons in London, Harvard Medical School, and the Mayo Clinic, and been interviewed for National Public Radio, NIGHTLINE, and the BBC. Stephen Segaller is director of news and public affairs programming at Thirteen/WNET New York. He is an author and producer specializing in journalism, media, and technology. At Thirteen, the flagship station of the Public Broadcasting Service, he is responsible for overseeing and developing all the news and public affairs output of the station, including weekly newsmagazines such as RELIGION & ETHICS NEWSWEEKLY; documentary series such as LOCAL NEWS, ALLIES AT WAR, and UNITED NATIONS: CENTER OF THE STORM; the continuing output of FRED FRIENDLY SEMINARS; and documentary specials and events such as FLEET WEEK and the multiple award-winning SREBRENICA: A CRY FROM THE GRAVE.

Alex Marengo is an award-winning director, producer, and writer of documentaries, dramas, and drama documentaries, specializing in the areas of history, culture, and science. He has spent the past 10 years as a freelancer, following eight years with BBC TV's Music and Arts Department. His films range from a drama based on the poems of Ariel Dorfman to a history of the piano (part of a BAFTA Award-winning series); from a dramatization of Handel's operatic arias (a Cable Ace nominee) to a biography of Diego Rivera; and from an exposé of psychic fraud through the ages to a chronicle of the Cold War battle to dominate the ocean depths.

Nick Read Gino Del Guercio
Producer/Director


Filmmaker Nick Read has been producing and directing highly acclaimed documentaries for over 10 years. Last year, his CAT STEVENS: BEHIND THE MUSIC, for VH1, was honored with the Entertainment Media Award and short-listed for an Emmy Award (Best Documentary). In 2000, he made the four-hour series FINEST HOUR, about the events of 1940, for the BBC and PBS.

Gino del Guercio is a documentary filmmaker from the Boston area, specializing in themes related to science, medicine, and technology. He has produced a wide variety of documentaries for PBS, Discovery Channel, and A&E. In 2001 his most recent PBS film, TRANSISTORIZED!, was named Best Science Documentary of the Year by the American Association for the Advancement of Science.
