Paul J. Schmidt, M.D., began a career in research and practice of transfusion medicine as blood bank director at the National Institutes of Health, and is a former president of the American Association of Blood Banks (AABB). He became intrigued by the unique individuals involved in the 300-year progression from the use of bloodletting as medicine's most important treatment to the use of blood transfusion as medicine's most important supportive therapy. He serves as official historian for both the American Association of Blood Banks and the International Society of Blood Transfusion.
