in these 'trying times', what with awful media news, pandemics, epedemics and other stresses, it's marvellous for me to come home from a days work, sit down in my studio and smash glass! the results of this 'agression' usually result in portraits of my children, grandchildren and my pets past and present...when you immerse yourself in creating these works, you sometimes put yourself in a meditative state and 'all is right with the world.

Thank you for an insightful story about the art of stained glass. Mr. Piercy has chosen some very talented people to work with him on his stained glass and they do beautiful and inspirational work that will still be with us for generations to come.

You should come to Saint Louis Abbey. They have wonderful stained glass there much of it done by students at Saint Louis Priory School. In the new high school there are 2 huge panels (20 ft?), all executed by the students under the tutledge of Brother Symeon, O.S.B. His work is remarkable and worth seeing.

I grew up in a church with fabulous stain glass windows - they inspire, their beauty baffles, one reflects on the artisan and embraces the miracle of glass, they comfort, they are important and a tradition to continue.

Kudos for your story about Mr. Piercy's stained glass! I would only add that I have a wonderful memory of visiting the stained glass works near Philadelphia when I in hight school and a member of Bryn Mawr Presbyterian Church. Also, you did not mention that there is another theory of the use of stained glass. In the Middle Ages, people believed that to enter a church, particularly a cathedral, was to have a glimpse of heaven. The stained glass, too high and complicated to see the stories, transformed the light, giving a "heavenly" glow to the interior space. It is also interesting to note that, previously, in Romanesque churches, the light was through "clear" windows and directed toward specific objects or parts of the building at certain times of day or seasons of the year.
