Superb, well-documented, insightful, and frightening. American religion has too often been complicit to our country's imperialistic ways.

Reading this while bombs and rockets rain down in Gaza is a striking example of the fruits of our imperialistic denial.

Where is the outcry from Americnas to stop the bloodletting? Yes, we are in a transition from one administration to another. However, where is the response from America to declare a cease-fire? When our only demand is to blame Hamas for the bloodshed, we entrench ourselves on one side in this complicated conflict. A thoroughly imperialistic attitude, even while we deny our imperial legacy!

The outgoing adminstration has repeatedly denied any real responsibility in fostering steps towards peace in the Holy Land. Even before the election it has been clear that the President prefers to hand off the difficult most problems to another administration and another generation (see global warming, financial collapse), and take the path of least resistance, which is to say, the path of military adventurism.

How can we, as professed Christians, intervene and demand a stop to the senseless spread of violence in the name of freedom and Christianity? This is a question which plagues all Christendom, and if we do not demand an end to our American policy of expanding freedom and Christianity through military force, we will fail just as surely as Rome and many other empires failed.

We don't claim to have all the answers, however, Jesus said it best in His Sermon on the Mount. Is it too much to think that a national policy could be based on the moral creed He taught us that day? We pray daily that this could come to pass...it is our legacy in fulfilling Jesus' demand that we love our enemies, and our neighbors as ourselves!

Reading the gospel, I have the impression that Jesus kept himself aloof from political discussion or overt actions. "Render to Caesar etc." Or berating Peter for dismembering a soldier's ear. Still, His sermon on the mount was a goal setter for a way to live within Judaeism and the Roman Law. As in several teaching Jesus sometimes forgets what He said yesterday.
