intro backstage what is tantalus? credits resources

The six months rehearsal and process that went into Peter Hall's production of John Barton's "Tantalus" was shaped by clashing egos, the destruction of relationships by pride and stubbornness, the constant threat of failure, and a cast and crew struggling to maintain their faith in their work.

TANTALUS: BEHIND THE MASK, the latest installment of Thirteen/WNET New York's STAGE ON SCREEN series, candidly chronicles the creation of "Tantalus," a theatrical event so grand in scope that each performance was mounted as either a full day marathon or over the course of two days. Filmmakers Benjamin Francis Phelan and Dirk Olson, who were granted full access to the production's preparations in Denver, document everything from rehearsals and costume fittings, to marketing meetings and cast dinner breaks.

Go backstage to meet the writers, directors, designers and actors that brought "Tantalus" to life. Get the inside scoop on how "Tantalus" leapt off the pages of John Barton's original text and onto the stage of the Denver Center for the Performing Arts.
