The struggles of Tantalus are not singular, they are the struggles of every generation. The desperate attempt to survive, to continue to achieve our hopes and dreams even when the boulder of fate hangs precariously over us seems to be an incredibly poignant metaphor for life in this country since the terrible events that took place last September.
The rock that hangs over us has shaken. It may be for the first time that many of us have even noticed that it was there. For other generations the rock may have shook during the wars in Europe or Asia, or even during the missile crisis of the 1960's. What we have learned, like the generations before us is that we too are like Tantalus, we will never not stop striving for what we need to survive even in the face of fear.
