"They're Wonderful People!" by Rachel G., Brooklyn |

I once hailed a cab at La Guardia airport, to go to Prospect Heights, Brooklyn. Cabbies are never excited about taking someone to Brooklyn, because they probably won't get a fare back into Manhattan. As soon as I told him where we were going, he started cracking up. "17 years I've been driving a cab in New York City. Never have I come to La Guardia to pick up passengers until today. My friend, he always tells me I should come to La Guardia, but I always knew I would get a passenger who wants to go to Brooklyn. Ha ha ha!" As he drove toward the BQE [Brooklyn-Queens Expressway], where traffic was at a standstill, he got on his cell phone and called his friend. "Hey! I told you! I went to La Guardia like you said! Guess what! I got Brooklyn passengers. And the traffic is terrible. But I don't care anyway, they're wonderful people. I'm having a great time." He regaled us with taxi stories for the rest of the ride.
