"Unexpected Kindess" by Bette M. |

About 15 years ago a friend of mine went in to New York City to go to
Columbia Presbyterian Hospital. She took a subway uptown and when she
arrived at her stop, she was the only one left in her subway car. She
was frightened because she felt the neigborhood and subway station were
not the safest. When she came out of the hospital she did not want to
take the subway. She hailed a cab and asked the driver to take her as
far as $5.00 would get her in the direction of Penn Station (that's all
the cash she had). She told the cab driver of her uncomfortable trip
uptown. The cab driver told her he would take her to Penn Station
because he wanted to be sure she got there safely. He gave her his name
and address and told her to send him the balance of the fare.
Ever since that day, I tell that story whenever I hear people say
something negative about cab drivers.
