1. What was your reaction when you first learned you had been chosen to be a Viking?
I was very pleased to have been chosen for the role. I have always had
an interest in the past, especially in the Viking period. To be given
the opportunity to experience the Viking lifestyle, and to learn some of
their fighting skills firsthand was a chance of a lifetime.
2. What do you believe was your biggest triumph as a Viking?
I believe my biggest triumph was winning the tug-o-war, which, unfortunately, was not broadcast. I have always been a keen sports person, with tug-o-war being my main sport while serving in the Army, and to win it on the day with other members who had never pulled before was, I feel, no mean achievement.
3. What was your lowest moment as a Viking?
The lowest moment for me would have to be at about 2 am on the first
night when I woke up freezing cold. The hut where we were living was
fine when we went to sleep, but the fire went out during the night and
the hut soon went cold. The two blankets that I had did nothing to
keep the cold out. Also, sleeping on the floor was very uncomfortable.
I'm used to a soft bed these days.
4. Overall, how would you rate your performance as a Viking?
I believe I coped very well as a Viking. I enjoyed the outdoors lifestyle and I have always been a competive person. I enjoyed learning the combat skills and the fighting techniques and being part of a team.
5. If you had to choose between daily life as a police officer or as a Viking, which would you choose?
If I had to choose, I would still be a police officer. Modern day living is so much easier. The beds are so much more comfortable. If I'm cold, the heating in my house allows me to turn it on at the touch of a button. I can go to the fridge when I'm hungry, and get a drink from the tap. However, the pressure is still there in the Viking times as it is in this day and age -- whether it is concern about where your next meal is coming from or worrying about the mortgage
repayments.
6. Did your experience as a Viking live up to your expectations? I did enjoy the experience and, yes, it did fulfill my expectations. It was a once-in-a-lifetime experience, living the life as a Viking in this day and age, an opportunity that not many other people in my situation will have the chance to experience. It's something that will remain with me for the rest of my life.
