World Links: Iranian Candidate Ready for Nuclear Talks, Sri Lankan Military Shelling Linked to 20,000 Civilian Deaths

North Korea test-fires a short-range missile on its East Coast – the the sixth missile it has launched since its second nuclear test on Monday.  Chinese fishing boats flee the Wast sea amid fears of a pending clash.

Iranian presidential candidate, Mir-Hossein Moussavi, says he is ready for nuclear talks with the U.N. Security Council but “will not compromise” on “its right to develop nuclear technology.” Another challenger to President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad campaigns to ex-pats.

An investigation by the Times U.K. reveals in the final days of the Sri Lankan civil war more than 20,000 Tamil civilians were killed, mostly by government shelling. A Sri Lankan human rights advocate tells the U.N. Human Rights Council that media workers  have been subjected to intimidation and death threats.

Chinese officials offer a hard line response to recently published memiors of a Chinese Communist Party chief who opposed Army intervention against pro-democracy students in Tiananmen Square as the anniversary of the protest approaches.
