World Links: U.S Deploys Missile Interceptors to Hawaii, Iran's Supreme Leader Orders Halt to Street Protests

Iranian’s electoral commission agrees to meet with the three presidential candidates who ran against and lost to incumbent president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, while Iran’s supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khomeini calls for an immediate stop to street protests.

The United States military announces plans to deploy ground-based missile interceptors to Hawaii in advance of a long-range missile test by North Korea.

Twenty-four paramilitary Algerian police officers are ambushed and killed by anti-government rebels southeast of Algiers.

A car bomb kills a Spanish police officer in Spain’s largest Basque city, Bilbao. The separatist group ETA is suspected but has not claimed responsibility for the bombing.

Peru’s Prime Minister Yehude Simon agrees to ask the Peruvian congress to repeal two controversial land laws that have sparked massive protests among indigenous groups in the Amazon.

A South Korean newspaper reports that North Korean leader Kim Jong-Il’s health is rapidly deteriorating. He is reportedly being treated at a hospital in Pyongyang.
