  • Drill
  • Screwdriver
  • Utility Knife
  • Work Gloves
  • Safety Glasses
  • Hammer
  • Flat Bar
  • Reciprocating Saw
  • Tape Measure
  • Tin Snips
  • Level
  • Shims
  • Screws
  • Nails
  • Construction Silicone
  • Caulk gun
  • Caulk
  • Step Stool / Ladder
Directions:

NOTE: These are the instructions for the Garden Window we installed (Simonton Windows/Ventana Series 2000). Be sure to follow the manufacturer's instructions for your particular installation.

  1. Remove existing window. (Our window was aluminum with a triple track storm and screen, wood trim on outside) This is how we removed our window:
    • Removed screws holding window frame to outside of house
    • Then scored through caulking and removed wood trim
    • Use hammer and pry bar to loosen window from wooden frame (We had adhesive holding window in place)
    • In order not to damage vinyl siding, we started in the corner and cut out the window frame with a reciprocating saw (Our window frame was behind vinyl siding)
    • Used a combination of tin snips and a utility knife to trim back siding as needed
    • Our opening is larger than necessary for the new window, so we secured plywood spacers / framing in current opening
  2. Lift new window into position.
  3. Level up window. Shim as needed. Put a couple of screws in bottom so it doesn't move.
  4. Check for plumb. Shim as needed. Secure with screws along top.
  5. Add nailing flange to outside window frame. Secure with silicone.
  6. Add wood trim to outside and inside window frame to finish off. Caulk around edges of trim.
