A celebration to inaugurate a new traffic roundabout

One day in Dangriga we saw a huge tent in the middle of the street, and a cop told us we had to make a detour. It was a celebration to inaugurate a new traffic roundabout -- women were dancing in the street, everyone was singing call-and-response, and the mayor was there with a DJ, drummers and dancers.
People dancing

Late at night, two drummers started a groove that just rolled like waves, and the whole Wandabi Entertainment Center began dancing. Sometimes you think all drumming sounds alike, but this was amazing.
People dancing

One woman in a tank top was dancing as if she were in a trance. I was mesmerized -- when I looked down at my tape, it had been 17 minutes, and I thought it was about three. I didn't dance, but I was totally caught up in the music like everyone else.
People playing a game

The Wandabi Entertainment Center is a friendly little outdoor bar/dive with a thatched roof and lots of people just hanging out, looking for love, drink, conversation. Right behind the checker players, drummers were pounding away. I felt part of the scene, no hassles.
