America's Biggest Construction Job Yet Six Companies, a San Francisco firm, won the contract, with the lowest bid. It was the largest construction job in U.S. history. Costing $48,890,955, the project called for 4.4 million cubic yards of concrete and 45 million pounds of pipe and steel. The company would have to build the world's biggest concrete factory and the nation's biggest power plant. And they would have to build a new city to support 5,000 workers and their families.
